Current dialing codes are listed on the following pages by country / state. The 2-character abbreviation (assigned by the International Standards Organization (ISO) for countries) is also provided. If you want to lookup a specific number, use the city finder.

World Zones

The world's telephone numbers are assigned by various international and national numbering plans. The first few digits of an international number, by convention written with a leading plus, are assigned by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which divides the world into zones by the first digit as follows:

DigitZone
+1North America
+2Africa
+3Europe
+4Europe
+5Central and South America
+6South-West Pacific
+7Russia and Parts of Former USSR
+8Far East
+9Middle East
+0Unassigned

North America

Numbers starting with +1 are North American numbers, and the next 3 digits are known as the area code. The North American Numbering Plan covers the US, Canada, and several Carribean nations. For example, +1-201 is New Jersey, +1-204 is Manitoba, and +1-242 is The Bahamas. Note that a state or country may have multiple area codes, and different area codes may even cover the exact same geographic region. All numbers within North America are 11 digits long (including the leading 1), the last 7 digits identifying the switching center and subscriber line. When dialing direct from within North America, you must dial all 11 digits. View North American area codes.

International

Numbers that don't start with +1 are outside North America. Most of these countries independently assign their national numbers hierarchically, that is, by allocating unique prefixes of varying length to regions or cities. Generally, larger cities are assigned fewer digits than smaller cities. International numbers are usually between 9 and 12 digits long. When dialing direct from within North America, you must dial 011 before an international number. View International country codes.

Mexico

Mexico changed its national dialing plan to accommodate more telephone numbers and to meet ITU guidelines. Whereas the old plan used 8-digit national numbers without area codes, the new plan uses 10-digit national numbers with 2 or 3-digit area codes. Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey have 2-digit area codes: 55, 33, and 81, respectively. The rest of the country has 3-digit area codes. The new plan started November 17, 2001 and the old plan stopped February 17, 2002. For example, to reach a number in Mexico City, you would dial +52-55-(8-digit number). View Mexican area codes.
